NOAH

The night wraps up, Carlotta evades arrest, and the three ambulances that showed up on the scene were able to treat the wounded on sight.

“Carlotta, I hereby banish you from another public gathering for the solid next month,” I tell her as we enter the house that Lottie shares with Everett. I’m holding Lyla Nell as she snores softly over my shoulder.

“Sorry, Foxy.” Carlotta sighs deeply. “But haven’t you caught on by now? That’s how the Grim Reaper plays the game. A gathering occurs, Lot’s desserts are featured, then whammo”—she slaps her hands together so hard, Lyla Nell’s body jerks, but thankfully it’s still not enough to wake her—“the killer strikes, and I’m off to greener pastures. That is, until I head straight back for the B&B. I’ve already thought up a dozen new ways to scare the pants off the guests. I’m going to be a hit.”

“How’s that?” Lottie asks with a tone that lets us know she is reticent to do so.

“By leaving creepy notes in their stash of underwear. Not only that, but I plan on infiltrating the mirrors with my own reflection and telling ’em if they don’t head down to my bakery and cakery they’ll be cursed for seven decades.” She turns to Lottie. “You can thank me later.”

“I’m not thanking you at all,” Lot says, taking Lyla Nell from me. “I’ll be right back. I’m dropping this peanut off in her crib.”

“Wait,” Carlotta calls after her. “I didn’t tell you about the trail of blood I’ll be leaving all over that place.”

Lottie scoffs as she heads up the stairs. “Carlotta, you’ll be a ghost. You won’t have any blood.”

“That’s where you come in,” Carlotta shouts after her.

The door jangles and in walks Evie. “Dash and the guys are coming over in a bit,” she says as she speeds for the kitchen.

“No way,” Everett barks, and all heads swivel his way. “I’m sorry, Evie, but it’s late and it’s a school night.”

“It’s only nine,” she insists. “Besides, they’re already on their way over. They’re picking up tacos. We’ll hang out in the backyard for like an hour. It’ll be fine.”

“I said no,” Everett doubles down while invoking that demonic tone of his. “And didn’t you break up with Conner until prom? Prom’s not for another two weeks. I don’t want to see that kid’s face around here again. You got that?”

The air in the room stills just as Lottie trots down the stairs.

“What’s going on?” she asks with her laptop in hand.

“Nothing,” Evie says, glaring at her father. “I guess I’m going to bed early. Thank you, Dad. I won’t forget this.” She bullets up the stairs, and Carlotta howls like a loon while laughing.

“Good one, Sexy.” She offers up a brisk applause his way. “You got your cranky pants on, and now you’ve practically forced Evie’s hand to sneak a boy into the house.”

“Please.” Lottie rolls her eyes. “Evie doesn’t do that stuff. Besides, Conner is welcome to come over any time he wants.”

“Not anymore,” I say as Lottie takes a seat on the sofa and I plop down right next to her.
